As his achievements propel him toward great status in his tribe, he meets a young maiden, Oljetoha, and decides to marry her. As their friendship grows, his status falls into jeopardy as he challenges the most powerful leaders of his tribe, one of which happens to be his father. Will he defy tradition, defy the elders, and defy his father to take Oljetoha as his wife? Will his anger and defiance cost him his status, his life, or even Oljeotha's life? The story navigates the reader through a myriad of Native American customs and cultures as Yazzie tries to find his way in life while retaining his honor, his family, and his love.
