The Lavender Veil
Queer history has often survived in fragments. Occult history has often survived in whispers. This book follows the places where those two hidden worlds touched.
The Lavender Veil explores the long, strange, and often overlooked relationship between queer lives, secret societies, spiritualist circles, witchcraft accusations, ceremonial magic, coded friendship, chosen names, goddess movements, and the private rituals of people who lived outside ordinary permission.
Across centuries, people on the margins found meaning in symbols, secrecy, hidden rooms, spiritual reinvention, and communities that existed away from public approval. This book does not claim that all occult history was queer, or that all queer history was occult. Instead, it traces a more careful and fascinating pattern: the shared conditions of concealment, coded language, chosen belonging, and the search for spiritual space when ordinary society offered little room.
Inside this book, readers will encounter:
- Witch trials, accused bodies, and the language of "unnatural" difference
- Medieval spiritual friendship and the difficulty of reading desire in old records
- Molly houses, masquerades, secret rooms, and the hidden city after dark
- Victorian spiritualism, s ance circles, mediums, mourning, and women's authority
- Secret societies, ritual names, ceremonial magic, and double lives
- Theosophy, occult modernism, pagan revival, queer spirituality, and sacred reinvention
- The archive as a place of fragments, silence, damage, and survival
Written with care, atmosphere, and historical restraint, The Lavender Veil is a serious cultural history of secrecy, identity, ritual, and the lives that survived only sideways in the record.
For readers interested in queer history, occult history, spiritualism, witchcraft studies, secret societies, women's history, and the hidden margins of the past, this book opens a door into a world that was never fully erased.
