"The Lavender Box" is an utterly charming and delightful collection of poems that should appeal to children between the ages of, say, 5 and 11. Accompanied by squiggly and expressive pen-and-ink drawings, the poems cover a range of childhood concerns -- from the invention of a new language with words like "ishta bishta," to the feel of an earthworm ("There's nothing really firm/ About a wriggly, wiggly worm"), to the pressing responsibilities of caring for a brood of clamshells ("Sometimes I take them for a walk/ And carry them, all thirty;/ And sometimes give them all a bath/ When they are very dirty."). The poems manage to capture a child's point of view without slipping into condescension, and the language is both rhythmical and fresh. In short, this is a real gem of a book, and would be a valuable addition to any child's bookshelf.
