Bugbears are a communal race traditionally associated with evil and with a deep hatred for elves. In order to teach their young, however, they keep samples of their enemies as pets. Enter Ptielieren, a relatively young adult elf, who lives moment to moment in fear of upsetting his captors. Perpetually hungry, often injured, and vaguely jealous of the stability he sees in those of similar rank to himself, Ptielieren has resolved to court a handler, a single bugbear who will offer food, protection, and stability in exchange for a mutual exchange of companionship and willing compliance to the cultural expectations of the den. With so much to gain from making a partnership work, Ptielieren is willing to accept the guiding hand of any bugbear that will take him, casting his sense of self to the side. This is not a happy story, but nor is it a tragedy.
