The Last Roman Knight

By: Smith, Carey

The crisp evening air swept over the citadel, carrying the distant hum of the wind as it rustled through the towering forests of Verinos. From his perch atop the balcony, Tiber Varian felt the cold bite of the night wind against his skin. His sharp gaze lingered on the vast horizon, where the dark line of the mountains met the evening sky. The distant lights of the Imperial Capital flickered faintly, barely visible from his stronghold on the rugged and isolated planet of Verinos.
Verinos, with its sprawling forests and majestic mountains, had been the home of House Cerberus for generations-an ancient house tied to the founding of the Roman Galactic Empire itself. The planet's dense woods and fortified strongholds had made it a vital defensive outpost, and it was here that Tiber had trained his legion, molding them into an elite force capable of holding the empire's fringes against any enemy.
But now, the real enemy was no longer a distant threat. It was within the empire itself.
Tiber, commander of the empire's most feared legion, felt the weight of what was to come. His instincts had always served him well, and now they screamed danger. Emperor Granix LI, the aging ruler who had kept the empire unified through sheer force of will, was dying. His health had deteriorated rapidly over the past year, leaving the throne in a precarious position. The emperor's son and heir, Helix, was not yet ready for the weight of the crown. And in the shadows, the minor houses-long subdued under the iron rule of the empire-were growing bold, their ambitions whispering of rebellion.
