The Last Rally
He helps the dying say goodbye. He is not the Grim Reaper you've heard about.
Terminal lucidity is a phenomenon in which people close to death suddenly become clear-minded. They remember. They speak. They reconnect with the people they love. Most doctors regard it as a final, unexplained rally.
Here is where Ellis comes in.
Ellis has been witnessing it for sixty years. He appears as a porter, a nurse, a cleaner, forgettable. His job is simple: sit with the dying, give them time to finish what needs finishing, and walk them to the lift.
He is not the Grim Reaper of legend. No hood. No scythe. He arrives quietly, listens, and stays until the end. A quiet, compassionate presence who makes sure nobody leaves this world alone.
Then he meets Clara.
She smiles when she sees him. "You've come back."
Ellis has never seen her before.
As Clara's final days unfold, Ellis begins to question the only life he has ever known. Who was he before this job? Why does Clara know him? And what is he willing to lose to do the work that matters most?
The Last Rally is a quiet, life-affirming novel about terminal lucidity, memory, and the simple act of making sure nobody leaves this world alone.
