In1890, Gertrude Stange arrived by steamer at Pysht Bay; she was two years old. Her father Joseph had brought his family there to claim homestead land. He chose a forty-acre site in the Pysht River Valley, where "Gertie" spent the rest of her long life (she lived to be nearly 100 years old).Gertie told many stories of her early years on the Pysht River, of a life centered around outdoor activities - clearing land with her father, caring for their farm and, most of all, trapping. As a young woman, she also carried the mail on horseback, from East Clallam (Clallam Bay) to Pysht. (She once shot and killed a cougar on her route.) These stories illuminate a way of life that has been nearly forgotten.
