The Last Mile (Mitch Turner Legal Thrillers)

(Book #5 in the Mitch Turner Legal Thrillers Series)

A DEAD WOMAN IS FOUND FLOATING IN A POOL. Defense attorney Mitch Turner's newest client, Gilbert Claybourne, is the nicest guy, at least according to everybody Gilbert works with. They all assure Mitch that Gilbert is innocent and that there is no way Gilbert could've murdered his fellow employee, Sheena Tillman. But Mitch has his reservations, and his concerns only grow the further he gets into his investigation. It's apparent from their first meeting that Gilbert has a connection to Sheena that he's anxious to keep hidden. TOO MANY SECRETS. The more Mitch learns about Gilbert Claybourne, Sheena Tillman, and everybody working with the two of them, the more convinced Mitch becomes that everyone is harboring a secret. Some of what's hidden seems relevant. Some not. The deeper he digs, and the more he uncovers, it becomes difficult to say what's true. And it doesn't help that the victim left a trail of enemies in her wake. CAN MITCH LEARN THE TRUTH BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE? Mitch pushes forward to the trial without a clear picture of what happened, ever doubtful of his seemingly innocent client while looking into everything he can, hoping to discover the truth before the jury renders their verdict. The trial is an uphill climb because the deck is stacked against him, and even the judge seems to be rooting for the prosecution. Can Mitch discover the truth in time to see that justice is served? Before his client is sent away for a crime he might not have committed? Pick up your copy today to find out! Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. "Thank you for coming here, Mr. Turner," Gilbert said. "I apologize for meeting you in such poor circumstances, but I doubt I'd have met you otherwise." I studied the man a moment longer before nodding. "Just for the record, I'm not your attorney. Not yet, at any rate. But attorney-client confidentiality has attached, so you can feel free to speak with me. I have questions, but how about you start?" As much as I would've preferred to have my initial conversation elsewhere, I had to understand what was happening. I needed enough information to make an educated decision about my potential client. "You're sure our discussion is confidential?" Gilbert glanced at the mirror and seemed uncomfortable. "Yes, even if I decide not to take the case." "What if somebody's on the other side of that mirror?" "If there's information you're afraid of the cops overhearing, you can wait to tell me in private, assuming you get out on bond and I sign you as a client." Gilbert nodded as he licked his lips. "I've been set up." I just waited. He acted like this was a revelation, but I wasn't surprised based on what I'd learned from his mother. I'd also heard this hundreds of times, and it had only proven true in a handful. My clients always claimed to be innocent, and I believed them until I didn't. I figured that was part of the duty I owed them rather than dismissing their claim and treating them like they were guilty, even though I knew most were. Gilbert hesitated. "You've developed a reputation, Mr. Turner, for helping people out, especially those who are innocent. I just want you to know right up front I didn't do this. I'll swear to it if you put my hand on the Bible." "Just tell me what happened and why they suspect you."
