The Last Flame of Khalevi

Prologue: The Fall of the Flame (2/4 parts)

Snow blanketed the valley of Gl mafall like a burial shroud, the silence of winter broken only by the occasional distant crack of shifting ice. High atop the mountain keep, Queen Sigr n Flameborn stood beneath the shadow of the great Flame Spire, her golden braid catching flecks of falling snow. Her hands rested lightly on the carved stone railing, overlooking the kingdom she once believed unshakable. But tonight, the wind carried the scent of ash and treason.

Behind her, the ceremonial flames in the Hall of Flame danced low and uneasy, as though they too sensed the approaching storm. The spire, an ancient construct of obsidian and soulwood, had stood for two thousand years, fueled by the sacred fire of the Fyrm ne-the lunar flame said to be gifted to the first monarch by the spirits of the north. That same fire now flickered weakly, as though recoiling from what was to come.

Sigr n turned at the sound of heavy boots. Her captain, Vetrik, entered the hall and knelt.

"He's come," Vetrik said. "Eldgrim rides at the front, with the Raven Watchers."

Her breath caught, not in surprise but sorrow. "How many?"

"Thousands, my Queen. And... he bears the Mark."

The Mark. She'd prayed it wasn't true.

Twenty Years Earlier

The boy who would become Eldgrim Kjorn was born in the shadow of flame and royalty, a son of the royal line but unlit by magic. Even as an infant, the flames recoiled from him. The servants whispered it quietly, calling him " -m gulegra"-the Unthinkable One. In Khalevi, magic was not merely a gift; it was a birthright. A king or queen could not rule without it. Without the Flame, you were no more than ash on the wind.

But Eldgrim saw the flame in others-and learned to hate it.

As his cousins grew into their powers, dancing fire between their fingertips and whispering to the stars, Eldgrim was left to study history, warcraft, and politics. He read obsessively in the castle's shadowed library, devouring forgotten tomes and dark scrolls no tutor had ever assigned him. In the silence of exile within his own family, Eldgrim grew cunning, patient, and deeply angry.

When he was sixteen, he found the Book of Black Frost beneath the crypts of Norrvargr-a tome bound in ice-burned leather, sealed with blood. Inside, he found the rituals of the Ylms, an ancient, banished order who had once tried to control the Flame through death magic. Their philosophy was brutal but simple: If you cannot wield the Flame, then bind it.
