The director, Rod Lurie, voice-over does rings around the movie itself.

The movie is well done for a formulaic conflict between leaders. Some leaders are born, and some leaders are made. The leaders that are born will survive. I am not a fan of prison movies, but this one has a twist being military. I am not a fan of movies that are too much Redfordized, as he changes many of the basic story concepts and points from books. Redford acts more than modifies in this production. Redford even carries real rocks. He does get a chance to make an “Ayn Rand” type speech about halfway in. Be sure to listen to the voiceover that shows what they are trying to accomplish. Being formulaic, you pretty much know what is going to happen. The fun in the movie is watching them do it. Good actors, good characters, good scenes, etc. If you want to see a real conflict of leadership or authority, then you need to watch Iliad movies like “Troy” (2004). Or better still, read the story.
