In the wake of a catastrophic pandemic and the near annihilation of the human race, sixteen-year-old Maya struggles to survive in an uncivilized world after discovering she may be the last known carrier of Kuru88-the cannibal disease that wiped out over three-quarters of the global population.
Maya lives out her days quarantined in the abandoned outpost of Proper Colony. Sequestered in an old library with twins Jobe and Markus. Maya escapes through the stories in her books and daydreams of a life beyond the colony wall-a life of freedom. After passing her treaty-mandated Carrier Screening, Maya returns to Proper, deemed clean. Yet she can't stop thinking about the Clinic-the bizarre people locked in glass cages-and the mysterious medical files she found one night while snooping.
Back home, when Maya's worst fears come true during Proper's annual Purity Festival and the once-extinct disease resurfaces, chaos erupts, and she and the boys are forced to flee as Proper burns behind them-taking Maya's dirty secret with it. Thrust into an unfamiliar world of thieves, baby wranglers, and flesh dealers, the threesome heads south toward rumored safety.
But with Colonial Lindy hunting them, the path to the Free Zone grows more and more dangerous. Will they find their way? Or will they end up ash like the others?
