Although these are made up characters and this is a work of fiction, there are actual people who share the same views as the characters do in this story. We live in a diverse world. A world where people come from different backgrounds, have different views, and different skin tones. That's why it's supposed to be the land of the free isn't it? A land where everyone is supposed to have endless opportunities, a land where you're supposed to be free to live however you want, and free to express your opinion without judgement? America is called the Land of the Free but it only seems to apply to those who adhere to the standards that are considered acceptable to society. What happens when you're discriminated against because of the color of your skin? Or you're criticized because you practice a different religion? What if you're in a same-sex relationship? Are you seen as an American then? Or are you an outsider in a country that isn't really free at all?
