Ten-year-old orphan Thomas Meek meets the adoptive parents his heart has yearned for only to have them lose their claim on him before he can climb into their car. The usurpers are a strange couple indeed: Mr. and Mrs. Conniption, a sneering pair of connivers who appear to have the Proper Papers to make Thomas their foster child. He has no choice but to go with them to the trash choked, scary-looking shack that the Conniptions call home. They put him to hard labor. Mr. Conniption wrecks the only things that Thomas values - the books that his real father gave him. What's more, Mr. and Mrs. C try to coerce him into seeking a treasure chest buried in a nearby mine, a venture made all the more dangerous by the gigantic sea serpent that guards it. Thomas despairs until he meets a very odd friend - a girl named Birdie who appears to him only when he's wearing his father's glasses. Birdie helps him escape the Conniptions for short whiles by leading him into Beyond Belief, a wondrous land that can only be reached through any of his father's damaged-but-readable books.In Beyond Belief, Thomas learns that attitudes like perseverance, gratitude, and kindness are worth more than gold. But his life in our world grows worse at the hands of the Conniptions. Despite Birdie's warnings that the treasure will destroy him, bitterness and his desire for freedom push him toward going after it. His decision--to take the treasure or to let it go--is a matter of joy or grief and life or death for him, Birdie, and the parents who would give all they had to adopt him.
