James Plumptre, a clergyman in the Church of England, published 'The Lakers' in 1798: a comic play gently satirising Lake District tourism and the fashion for botany. Not until 1999 did it receive its first performance, in the Lakeland town of Keswick where the play itself is set. This edition includes annotations identifying the people, places and botanical terms which appear in the play, and a short introduction.
