Book Overview

I enjoy keeping this book in my project bag as a quick reference tool while knitting my projects. Its a topical type book and not a read thru book. For example, the pattern asks for a ssk to be performed. Thus you can quickly look up and the book provides information for you to perform that requested skill. Thus the title, “ The Knitters Companion” is an apt title. Looking at the table of contents, which reads as an index, I notice that the level of skills included are a thorough basic to get a knitter started in the craft. In preparation, covers supplies, yarn structure, yarn sizes, yarn label symbols, formula for interchanging yarns, sweater ease allowances, knitting needle conversion chart, and crochet hook conversion chart. (I just listed some of the topics, not all in preparation) It covers basic stitches, knit and purl in the English and Continental techniques, slip stitches and yarn overs. Another example, included are three cast on techniques, basic yet not all inclusive of cast ons. Joining yarns has three techniques; at the side, overlapping old with the new, and splicing. Knit decreases, borders and edges, button holes, short rowing, picking up stitches, color knitting, using double pointed needles and grafting. The author, Vicki Square also states, “ The book is not meant to be an all inclusive volume; if it were, you would not be able to carry it with you. But it does cover the information, charts and techniques that knitters most commonly need.” Her encouraging heart warming closing statement is thus, “Carry this little book with your knitting. My prayer is that it will help enhance your skills , and that it will be an encouraging companion in you growing experience as a knitter.”
