Senior Planetary Specialist and Biometsytems Engineer Major Quinn McCoy becomes stranded on an Earth-like planet that his ship, the Discovery, was investigating, when his shuttle is damaged on his return flight. Rescue was unlikely. He had to eject the jump drive before it exploded. It was most likely detected by the Discovery and he would written off as deceased. No one within three miles could survive such an explosion as that.But he did He rode the remains of his shuttle for the three hundred mile semi-controlled fall back to the planet where he crashed into a large meadow between a thousand foot sheer ridge and a moderate river valley several hundred feet below it.No intelligent life has been detected on the planet. Long range scanners didn't function here due to some form of peculiar radiation which acted as an energy dampening field. Energy weapons also failed to function. He would have to learn to survive alone, relying on his Marine survival training and his electronic companion Kayla, a very sophisticated artificial intelligence program on his Tactical Control Unit. There is something ominous about his new home. He could sense it and he must eventually discover what it was and face it, alone.
