Vita Chieu's story is a microcosm of the overseas Chinese betrayal by Red China and the Khmer Rouge. Through his eyes we see how the na?ve patriotism exhibited by the ethnic Chinese community in Cambodia was unrequited. Instead of becoming heroes, Vita Chieu and his comrades were abandoned by Red China and victimized by the Khmer Rouge. Through Chieu's account, we get the inside story on China's role in Southeast Asian politics, and how the Khmer Rouge remained a force despite their crimes against humanity. Chieu was working for Chinese intelligence, but because of his candid report of the massacre and starvation in Cambodia, he was considered unfaithful and expelled from China. Beijing also gave his information to Pol Pot, which led to the killing of So Phim, the fourth most powerful man in the Khmer Rouge, and triggered the rebellion in the Eastern Military Region. The nightmare in Cambodia was ultimately ended by Vietnamese intervention, in a series of events that may have been kicked off by Vita Chieu.
