Madeleine Devaux, a young English girl, accepts a job as a commercial courier making journeys between England and Europe. When World War II breaks out, she is in France. The train she is on is unexpectedly captured by the Germans and she is taken into custody. There is an explosion as the train arrives in Stuttgart. Madeleine is able to slip away, but as a stranger in enemy territory, who can she trust? It challenges her courage and her ingenuity. She goes into hiding, but finally has to make a dash to freedom before the Gestapo arrests her. She makes a daring escape.Later, she is recruited by British Intelligence. Her adventures continue after the war and take her throughout Europe, but she is still followed by a sinister assassin and other shadowy figures. Her quest is to be liberated from the fear and suspense of wartime memories. Her hope is that one day she may find the tranquility and love that eluded her during earlier experiences.
