Everything the beginning gardener needs to know about creating wonderful organic gardens in the backyard, on a balcony or in the schoolyard can be found in this comprehensive and easy-to-follow Jumbo... This description may be from another edition of this product.
My 7-year-old son has been insisting that he is going to grow a garden this year. I think it's a great idea, so great, in fact, that I want him to have full ownership of it--I want him to do the research, educate himself, and do it. He is motivated. So then I tried to find a book at his reading level that would inform him of the basics he needs to know. After wading through the cutesy books with the Mary Engelbreit art, and then some other books written at an adult's reading level for inspiring kids to get away from the TV and dig in the dirt, finally I found this book online. It turned out that our library has it, so I picked it up there tonight. After reading a few pages on his own, my son solemnly stated, "Mom, I need my own copy of this book; this book is just like your gardening manuals, except it's for kids. I will read this, Mom." It is just like my gardening manuals, except it has more projects. The chapter titles are "How Gardens Grow," "Fruit and Vegetable Gardens," "Flower Gardens," "Gardening with Native Plants," "Wildlife Gardens," and "School and Community Gardens." The only "draw"back about this book is that it is illustrated with only line drawings. Although each chapter contains plenty of fun projects and silly sidebars, this is a book for kids who are serious about becoming gardeners. It is written at about a 3rd- or 4th-grade reading level.

I love this book! I borrowed it from the library because my husband and I would like to have a garden and our children have also expressed a great interest in growing things. I love the format of this book, and the explanations are great! It's very user friendly. I've looked at other children's gardening books, but liked this one the best for me and my 5 and 4 year olds because it seems to cover everything without being too simple or too complicated! Now all I've got to do is get my own copy! It's a fun book!
