In the ensuing capital trial, a celebrity defense lawyer discovers that there is a huge financial conspiracy in play that goes back to the Great Depression of 1929, and if the town cannot stop it, it might do the same thing to them: Smash it like a pumpkin. Fear of an economic collapse causes other odd murders with several of them meant to solidify one family's status in town. The pace is fast, and the twists and turns disguise the major villain until the very end.
