The Journeyman

The life story of someone who worked as a policeman in two of the 'modern' Constabularies of mid Victorian England; Essex and the North Riding of Yorkshire and who, when the latter Force was formed, was the first officer to be stationed at Pickering, in an area whose policing was made famous a hundred years later by a well known and popular TV series.

John Jonas was also an incomer from the south, but his job wasn't only about the prevention of crime, as he undertook many roles that we nowadays wouldn't associate wth the police.

This meant that although crime was generally low in in rural England during the middle decades of the 19th century, John and his colleangues had busy working lives - they were probably the first 365 people, never mind 24/7.

As a Constable he was almost killed on duty, but as a Superintendent was the senior investigator of a particularly gruesome double murder.
