A powerful novel that explores the conflicts of the human soul, where the desire for understanding is at war with the need to run from trouble, and courage does not always win. Roaming India in 1939... This description may be from another edition of this product.
If you are not inclined toward books that compel you to think about the spiritual mysteries of life, about the way we choose to make decisions, about our processes for determining what and who will influence us and how, don't bother. But if you want to read a book that is hauntingly lyrical, that compels you to think about your own spiritual and intellectual journeys, that drives you to consider the reasons that propel you to do what you do, then read this book. Marvelous parallel structure which moves unerringly, unflinchingly, inexorably to a conclusion that forces you to confront not only your own mortality, but the legacy you believe you are building, the people you believe you are influencing and effecting--and how and why you proceed through your life's journey.
Impossible to give this a bad review

Reader from usa certainly got this wrong - not even a mention of Vienna or Israel. I guess this is the problem. This is a highly mystical book and will only be understood by those who have that inclination. Others will see it as confusing. I thought this was one of the great works of the last year and have made sure I have told everyone about it. It moved me for weeks after and to give this a bad review is just impossible.
Beautifully written and compelling.

This book grabs you. It isn't light reading, but you must read on. The characters evoke emotion, you pity them, loath them, care about them and feel sadness for them, but yet they stand alone, not needing this from you or anyone. The words pour from the pages, I found myself rereading passages just for the pleasure of the words. Most of the book takes place in India, and though I haven't been there, the sights, sounds and smells of it are so vivid that I got a feel for it, even the yellow haze of dust. Moses, the main character is a man who has no idea what destruction his actions cause and until later in the book. You wonder how this man can go through life so oblivious. However as his story and his Indian counterparts' story unfolds you are drawn into their actions and lives and it carries you along. This is not a "fluff" novel, it is deep, dark and yet has great beauty. For someone who loves to read...this book is wonderful.
