The Governess, the Convict and the Marriage of Convenience.,

Interesting historical romance set in England and Australia. Dorothea is a Governess. She is betrothed to David, a convicted forger. David has been sentenced to transportation to Australia. David, in his letters to Thea, vows to escape. Dorothea believes in his innocence and intends to join him in Australia. Unfortunately, she doesn't have the fare or the sponsorship that such a journey would require. Enter Dr Stephen Lord, a wealthy Colonist, who offers Thea a marriage of convenience. He wishes to establish a home for his young niece. Thea marries Stephen only to discover that he has his own secrets. Thea is not honest with Stephen. She is singleminded in her intent to find David. Initially, this does not make her an attractive personality, even though the reader understands her quest. Steven has hidden motives every bit as dark and self-serving as hers. This is a fast moving story with dark characters with interesting plot developments. The two central characters grow and realize that people and situations are not always what they seem. The character of the villian is persuasive and charming. Also, a fascinating look at Australia's history as a penal colony. Recommended.
