Book Overview

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the best book on the Japanese school, and especially on the underlying concepts. As such it is one of the most important books on Japanese society. Peter Drucker

Benjamin Duke knows both American and Japanese education intimately. His analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each is compelling. Everyone interested in Japan's economic performance over the past generation--and the next--needs to examine The Japanese School. Mike Mansfield, U.S. Ambassador to Japan

Lessons for the United States

I read this book when I was in college back in the 1980s and was amazed at the high level of instruction the Japanese carry out in their schools. Teacher visits to homes are an important part of the educational system, implicating everyone in the success of the student. Japan is a meritocracy, so competition sets in early, but the curriculum especially in math, makes intellect one of Japan's most valuable natural resources. I experienced Japanese schools as an exchange student and was impressed with the fact that students have to clean their schools, too, including bathrooms and hallways. Responsibility is another great lesson of the Japanese school that I have written about as a travel writer. Mr. Duke's book is a great insider's look at the Japanese educational system.
