A seven-year-old Japanese boy, Kiyoshi, is thought to be a genius. The whole world is talking about him. North Korea wants to kidnap him and use his abilities. The Japanese government is wary of him because he is not just smart, but there seems to be something supernatural about him, which raises concerns about his potential influence and the safety of those around him. They are considering removing him from his family.
An eight-year-old boy, Hiroaki, also lives in Japan. He is from a broken family, as his parents are divorced. He has become fascinated by Kiyoshi and wants to meet him and be his friend. Hiroaki believes it would make him happy.
His father advises him to write a letter to Kiyoshi, but cautions him not to get too excited. Millions of people would love to meet the boy. His father wants him to realize that it is unlikely that he will write back. And so, Hiroaki writes his letter, and the waiting game begins. He waits tirelessly for the mailman and the precious letter.
A butterfly begins to hang around Hiroaki, which is unusual. His father thinks there might be something wrong with the insect. It even visits at night.
North Korea dispatches three soldiers to kidnap the boy. They don't want to do it, but if they fail, they'll die, and if they succeed, they might nevertheless be killed.
