Kate Graham, an American working on her PhD in Ottoman d?cor at Harvard, eagerly accepts when Haci Ali Mustafa, her childhood pen pal, invites her to Istanbul to help solve a mystery. A series of enigmatic entries left in an ancient diary by Haci's great grandfather, Mehmi, claim the mystery will be solved by locating and interpreting cryptic clues hidden among the florals and geometric designs of the magnificent Iznik tiles adorning the city's mosques and palaces. Kate and Haci, as well as two mysterious, shadowy, and potentially menacing groups separately search for evidence that will lead them to stolen jewels and, more significantly, to a scroll containing a message that could alter Muslim beliefs and potentially bring an end to the ongoing conflict in the ever-volatile Middle East.
