4 stars because the writing of this book was engaging, the plot moved along and it was heartwarming. But my enjoyment was reduced because despite the back cover synopsis of the book, WW2 doesn't start and the nanny doesn't board the ship until you're more than halfway through! So waiting too long for those events to occur (what was represented asi ts main story) lessened my enjoyment . Also, I don't want to give too much away but contrary to the book synopsis, there is no search for the family. I think you'd enjoy the book much more if your expectations were managed. It's about a teen becoming an adult. Along the way are her best friend, her family and interesting people she becomes close with and with a few journeys and locales and trauma and loss that she learns to deal with. It's also a love story.
