We live in two worlds The inner world of needs, feelings and desires and the outer world of events and actions. Mental models form the link between the two words. This book is about improving the quality of our lives by deeper understanding of how our mind works. The main theme of the book is that mental models are basic tools of our minds. These are the tools which enable our mind to interpret the jumble of sense impressions received by our brains, recognize certain patterns in them and evaluate and give meaning to them. These meanings then control our behavior, which in turn leads us to success or failure in our lives. However, the jumbled abstractions stored inside are useful only if they are not cluttered and in resonance with each Only then will we achieve success in our actions in the outer world. Such a network of well-arranged mental models is the 'Inner Eye'. The lesser the clutter of negative metal models the better one can see with the internal eye. Mental models are the most complex of all models. Hence a review of the simpler models used in science and technology and models in other fields of human endeavor is done so as to understand the more complex mental models. Models used in science and technology are explicit which means they are precisely and clearly stated. This is possible because factors like emotions are totally in these models. However, emotions are of vital importance for understanding human behavior. Emotions cannot be clearly defined either in words or symbols. Hence mental models would necessarily be implicit which means not precise but rather suggestive of trends. Like all models, Mental models too are only half truths. They are useful for actions to be taken in the immediate present but not for predictions of actions in the future. Mental conflicts arise when we have ingrained in our mind two different models, which direct us to two different directions. We, vacillate, and become ineffective and depressed. Inter personal conflicts lead to misunderstandings, dissentions and quarrels between husband and wife, parents and children, employees and employer, practitioners of one religion and another, people of one nation and that of another. This happens when each there is a clash between mental models, made up of feelings, needs and desires, of the two parties concerned. When they think that their model is the only right model and they are unwilling to compromise. They hardly realize that all models are only partial truths and despite the progress we see all around, our ignorance is still colossal. Knowing this truth we are able to handle our life with greater wisdom, greater tolerance, and reduced conflict and stress. We can thus improve the quality of our lives and of those around us by getting in touch with the unconscious mind which is the real source of wisdom and power. Without such an understanding the inner eye will remain closed. The good thing is that we can control our mental models. Many methods of removing negative mental models are suggested. Autosuggestion, journaling, meditation, Prayers, yoga and NLP techniques are some discussed here. An integrated approach to all human knowledge has been adopted in this book. Free use of the ideas and viewpoints emerging from fields as diverse as science and technology and the wisdom of ancient scriptures form the foundation of this book.
