When Nicholas Cassini inherited a map from his aunt, the owner of an antique store, he wasn't expecting it to be a tourist's walking guide of Saint Augustine, Florida. Even more surprising was the hidden message it contained, pointing to a possible lost pirate treasure and a ghost tour company that could help him uncover it. Meanwhile, the pirate captain Robert Searle has survived to be almost as old as Saint Augustine itself by taking up residence in a supernatural lodge known as the Inn at the Crossroads. To him the treasure is unfinished business after his infamous 1668 raid on the town, and he and his alchemist quartermaster intend to secure it by any means necessary. To thwart the pirates and solve the mystery of the treasure's location Nicholas will need the help of history, a ghost hunter, a pasha of Egypt, and the spectral remains of his aunt. His journey takes him to the dungeonlike confines of a waterfront fortress, the dark back alleys of Old Town, ritual locations where ghosts are made, and ultimately to the door of the Inn at the Crossroads itself.
