The Ink Black Saint

By Sera Veyl

He learned the hardest way that feeling guilty is not the same as knowing the truth.

Eight years after leaving the priesthood, Gabriel St. James has rebuilt his life around rules he can trust. He is a meticulous New Orleans tattoo artist, he wears gloves when touch becomes too loud, and he no longer treats the strange colors his nervous system gives him as moral evidence. Then Dr. Evangeline Thorne walks into Saint's Skin with a seven-session Lilith back piece and a refusal to let anyone turn her body into a symbol.

The first time Gabriel touches Eva, the noise becomes gold. Quiet. Impossible. And dangerously easy to want.

Eva is a recently tenured religious-studies scholar writing about women, obedience, and the stories institutions use to make refusal look like sin. Gabriel is exactly the kind of man she should be able to analyze from a safe distance: former priest, professional tattoo artist, walking argument about shame. Instead, every session brings them closer, and every boundary they honor makes the attraction harder to dismiss.

But Gabriel's past is not finished with him. When private history becomes public and Eva's work is dragged into the fallout, desire is no longer their only risk. To build something real, Gabriel must stop making Eva into a saint, and Eva must decide whether being loved without being idealized is worth the vulnerability it demands.

THE INK BLACK SAINT is a dark, high-heat contemporary romance about religious trauma, bodily autonomy, consent, guilt, desire, accountability, and two adults learning that love does not require purity.
