Playing a Bigger Game

Some ideas, once encountered, quietly reorganize the way you see everything else. The distinction Simon Sinek draws between finite and infinite thinking is one of those ideas. A finite game has defined outcomes, winners and losers, measured by stock price, quarterly earnings, market share. An infinite mindset operates from an entirely different orientation: a cause larger than the organization itself, a commitment to improving lives and communities, a determination to keep serving that cause indefinitely into the future. The consequences of confusing the two are everywhere around us, layoffs justified by share price, safety compromised for margin, communities hollowed out in service of a metric.
