When Dr. Isla Penhaligon returns to the Cornish village of Saltmarsh to care for her dying mother, she expects decline in familiar forms: damp rooms, old grudges, bad weather, and the long slow humiliation of coming home after a professional fall. Instead she finds a harbour already out of tune with itself. The gulls hold impossible patterns over the water. Nets pulse on the quay as if breathing. Her mother speaks of voices in the silt and a low-tide grace older than chapel music. Then a fisherman named Rowan Kelynack brings in a pale unnatural catch from Dead Man's Cove, and the village begins to answer the sea in ways no illness should permit.
