A Tree With No Bark started with a crape myrtle in my backyard. Bark peels off it every year, so everything underneath is exposed, every scar, every mark, out in the open. That's what I felt like. This is what I still feel like. This book is me finally talking about it. Surviving domestic violence wasn't enough, surviving trauma period doesn't feel like it's enough, there's a bunch of self-help "heal your trauma" bullshit out there, but no on talks about the "in-between" when everything is silent, when no one calls anymore, when you're a single parent, when you are tired of hearing "live for your kids" no one talks about that. No one talks about how to live for yourself. Well, this book isn't it. I still don't know how to do that. I think it's a start though. I don't want to "live for my kids." I want to live with them.
Dishes prepared according to these recipes are great. The lay-out of the book is very clever: three fold-out sections, each spiral bound at the top, so you can view three recipes at once (tandoori, curry, and vegetarian). This book could be better, however. My complaints: (i) The ingredients are listed in alphabetical order, rather than order of use. (ii) Measures are presented inconsistently. Sometimes both European (weight) and American (volume) measures are given, but sometimes only the European measures are provided. Americans without a good gram scale will not be able to prepare some of these recipes. (iii) The photographs do not resemble the dishes prepared according to the recipe. Some license is expected in photographs of food, but these border on fakery.
Excellent Reference

This is a great reference for the beginner as well as a seasoned cook. The planner style makes it really easy for me to plan a whole meal. The recipes are detailed and authentic. The images with the recipe is a plus. I love it.
Recipes for some of the best East Indian dishes (with colour pictures!)

I've owned this book for over five years and have tried several dozen of the recipes. Every one has been a hit so far: the resultant dishes rival anything you could find in a thali (indian serving dish) ordered at the best of indian restaurants. Kudos to the chefs and author of the book!
Decent book...

I picked up this book in a local store (I basically liked the planner style layout of the book). Overall I think the recipes are good (authentic), all ingredients are authentically Indian and all recipes have accompanying images.
