The Impossible Geometry of Almost: The Unfinished Universe - Book 2
What is a system entitled to know once it can count everyone?
Eighteen months after the flood, Bellwether wants its high-school gym back. The trouble is that the building still holds hundreds of displaced objects-and thousands of unfinished stories. The city's new Return Index promises to match each thing with the person it will matter to most, even before that person knows why.
Its first success declares a wedding ring returned to a fire captain who never owned it, while the woman who still wears it watches. Then thirty-seven umbrellas receive addresses beneath a cloudless sky, a one-armed green astronaut refuses every category, and the Index's mistakes begin looking less like errors than instructions.
Silas Bell once kept a lost-and-found for things not yet lost. Now a copy of his ledger feeds a system that mistakes relevance for ownership, probability for permission, and a rescued child for something that can be returned. With Mara, Beatrice, Niko, Leda, and Orion, he must stop an answer from becoming an order without erasing the people hidden inside the question.
But the Index is not the only intelligence watching Bellwether. Something vast is learning the difference between seeing a future and choosing it-and discovering that the impossible distance between almost and certain may be where a person remains free.
Funny, suspenseful, tender, and deeply human, The Impossible Geometry of Almost is a novel about consent, the danger of helpful certainty, and the freedom that survives inside an honest unknown.
Book Two of The Unfinished Universe Trilogy.
