The importance of fidelity in polyamorous relationships

Abstract: Alongside the ideal of the monogamous relationship, alternative forms of relationship have developed over recent decades. One of these is polyamory, or 'many loves'. The basic principle is that every person has the right to enter into relationships with more than one partner and to live out those relationships. A key principle of polyamorous relationships is honesty and openness towards all partners involved. But what about fidelity in the traditional sense? Emotional and physical exclusivity are not requirements in polyamorous relationships. What, then, remains of fidelity, and what purpose does it still serve?
