The Impending Storm

"I knew nothing of a reality outside of war. The purpose of my existence was to heal the wounded and return life to the dead. However, the aftermath of the destruction I routinely witnessed began putting a strain on my mind and spirit.
I was lonely and longed for someone to speak with, a companion. I wanted someone to share my pain, someone who understood. Yet, I endured alone, constantly looking out over endless death and desolate remains."

Her eyes never moved, but she used her free hand to point where she looked. I followed her arm to a large, bright object suspended in the sky. I felt my heart sink as I knew it was over.

The emergency broadcast warning began blaring from our phones; Sam pulled hers from her pocket to read the message. She turned the radio on, and we sat in silence waiting.

"Police have received numerous reports of a disturbance in the night sky. Some mention it appears to be fire, but this has not been confirmed. Investigations are underway, and when we have more information coming in, we will let you know. Until then, authorities are asking for everyone to please stay in your homes and to remain calm."

"You are Blue Death. Must they come along? Take me. Leave them here. They are nowhere."

I knew her words were coming, but it did not make it any easier. What kind of mother would she be if she did not try to beg for her littles' lives?
My face never gave away how difficult my tasks were, but I was grateful no one else was in my mind.

"If you know who I am, you have your answer."
