The identity approach

The identity approach in Will Kymlicka's work explores the issues of cultural diversity in a globalized context where the coexistence of minority and majority cultures is a complex challenge. According to Kymlicka, while cultural diversity enriches nations, it also exposes minorities to marginalization and discrimination. The concept of "multicultural citizenship" he develops is based on the idea that the rights of minorities must be protected while being in harmony with liberal principles such as individual freedom, democracy and social justice.Kymlicka argues that societal cultures enable individuals to flourish by offering contexts of meaningful choice. Consequently, the state must guarantee special rights to vulnerable minorities to ensure their protection and survival. However, this tolerance has limits: it must not compromise individual autonomy. Kymlicka is accused by some thinkers, such as Chandran Kukathas, of not going far enough in his defense of minorities, since he refuses to tolerate anti-liberal practices within certain cultures.
