Mandelstam was one of the most talented and legendary poets of the 20th century in Russia and the Soviet Union. During the Civil War, he was imprisoned by both Red and White forces; in the 1930s, he was arrested twice and subjected to long periods of exile; he was always poor and had no place to live for long periods of time; and he tried to commit suicide on more than one occasion. ...... Ultimately, he died in a Vladivostok concentration camp. Mandelstam's prose is as important as his poetry. He discusses the conflicts and connections between Russian and Western culture, depicts life and the state of mind of the people in St. Petersburg at the time, and, most importantly, points to the future of culture: a future in which social buildings are no longer constructed with people, but for people. These words resisted death and suffering and illuminated human ideals that remain unrealized to this day - like a match that burns in a strong wind but is never blown out!
