Book Overview

A fallen god and an orphaned survivor set out for revenge in a dark apocalyptic thriller from the "Master of British SF"

The Gods have returned to the world.

Amri was a Rabbit, one of a tribe of survivors scratching out an existence in the blasted landscape of a shattered, poisoned world. The Seagull fight, the Pigeon trade and the Cockroach scavenge, but the Rabbit had one rule: If you want to see tomorrow, you run.

But they didn't run fast enough when a weapon fell from the sky and consumed their home, and now Amri is alone, in the company of a fallen god named Guy Vesten. A god who promises revenge against the three gods who turned against him, and who killed her tribe.

But gods don't die easily. Guy will need followers, like any god, and warriors to aid him in his quest. And if Amri is to find a place in the world that is to come, she may as well be standing at his right hand, as his priestess...

Always makes me ponder after

I really do admire the way Adrian Tchaikovsky takes an idea, and changes it up to something totally unexpected that makes the reader (or at least me) continue to think about it long after the book is finished. This may be just a novella but it sure packs a punch! Starting with Amri and her life in the ruins of a city of a post apocalyptic earth right when the "gods" return to remake the world in their own chosen image. Of course that leads to a lot of turmoil between the groups of survivors and the gods who are so one minded in their views (like plants only, carnivorous ones, or bugs, or plastic everything!) Then there is Guy who seems to be different and that is who Amri follows around. Yes, it is dark and lots of horrible death (eaten by ants, etc.) but also revelations and while the gods have great power, sometimes something different is needed for the world. I did like the twist at then end as it seemed fitting while also providing hope that even in the ruins of the world, it can still be possible to live. This was quite the quick and enjoyable audiobook to listen to. The narrator, Emma Newman, did a great job in bringing the quick and smart Amri to life and her story about when the gods returned to her world, bringing great change, some good, but some not so much. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen to this audiobook.
