The Human Chronicle: Volume V: 1950 - 2025 AD

Volume V of 5. World history year by year from 1950 to 2025 AD: the Cold War and the space race, the end of empires, the computer and the internet, the wars of the new century, the pandemic, and the rise of generative artificial intelligence.

The fifth volume of The Human Chronicle brings the series up to 2025 in five sections: 1950 to 1979, 1980 to 1999, 2000 to 2011, 2012 to 2019, and 2020 to 2025. It opens with the Korean War, the discovery of the structure of DNA, and Sputnik, then follows the founding of OPEC, the end of colonial rule across Africa, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, the Six-Day War, ARPANET, the Apollo program and the Moon landing, and Watergate.

The closing decades of the century bring Chernobyl, Tiananmen Square, the Gulf War, the launch of the Human Genome Project, CERN's release of the World Wide Web, and the Asian financial crisis. The volume records lesser-known episodes beside the headlines, among them the Cold War remote-viewing work of Project Stargate. The new century opens with the attacks of September 11, 2001 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, then Bitcoin, the rise of social media, the Arab Spring, and the election of Pope Francis.

The final section, the longest in the volume, covers 2020 to 2025: the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the drone warfare that followed, the war in Gaza, the reopening of Notre-Dame, and the arrival of ChatGPT and the new generation of artificial intelligence. Across the volume, entries also track the concentration of the media and arms industries. The volume closes with future calendar milestones, such as the Hebrew year 6000 AM in 2239.
