The Hon. Donald Gunn of Manitoba 1797-1878 and descendants: a Braehour Gunn family history

The Hon. Donald Gunn of Manitoba 1797-1878 was an early Scottish settler who hugely contributed to the development of Canada. He migrated from Scotland to the Red River Settlement in what is now Manitoba. He became a significant Manitoban politician including being Postmaster and Inspector of Fisheries. He was also a businessman, a judge and a significant contributor to the Smithsonian Institution in astronomy. In his later years he wrote the History of Manitoba. He married Margaret Swain, they had twelve children. His family was from Braehour, Halkirk, Caithness. He had many siblings and half-siblings. One of these was his half-brother William Gunn of Waranga Park, Victoria, Australia. Donald's uncle was Donald Gunn (the Sennachy) 1770-1861 of Braehour and Brawlbin whose great-grandson was the Hon. John Alexander Gunn 1860-1910 of New South Wales, a colonial scientist who developed an early anthrax vaccine. Braehour Gunns are of significance as they are the ongoing traditional Clan Gunn Chief line.
