It's 1873 in Broken Pine Montana. Elias Crowe has been sheriff for longer than he can remember. Certainly for longer than is healthy. After the loss of his wife and daughter three years ago, he is a shadow of the man he used to be. Now he goes through the motions day after day. He fills his days with whisky and regrets.
Then a gang of outlaws shows up in town. One of them has a grudge with Elias. He believes that the sheriff shot his brother dead when he could have just locked him up for one night. His hatred burns hard and hot and he won't let him go before he shows the man up and humiliates him in front of the whole town.
What will Elias do? How will he handle this man when he can barely handle getting out of bed every day? It looks like the sheriff's days are numbered.
