Book Overview

NATIONAL BESTSELLER - The complete four-book boxed set of the greatest fantasy epic of all time: The Lord of the Rings and its enchanting prequel, The Hobbit

When Thorin Oakenshield and his band of dwarves embark upon a dangerous quest to reclaim the hoard of gold stolen from them by the evil dragon Smaug, Gandalf the wizard suggests an unlikely accomplice: Bilbo Baggins, an unassuming Hobbit dwelling in peaceful Hobbiton.

Along the way, the company faces trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and worse. But as they journey from the wonders of Rivendell to the terrors of Mirkwood and beyond, Bilbo will find that there is more to him than anyone--himself included--ever dreamed. Unexpected qualities of courage and cunning, and a love of adventure, propel Bilbo toward his great destiny . . . a destiny that waits in the dark caverns beneath the Misty Mountains, where a twisted creature known as Gollum jealously guards a precious magic ring.

This boxed set includes:
THE HOBBIT
THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
THE TWO TOWERS
THE RETURN OF THE KING

A review of the notes, not the book.

J.R.R. Tolkien's the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings (Barron’s Book Notes) ISBN: 9780812035230 The first thing J.R.R. Tolkien says is that this is not a parable or an allegory. He emphasizes that this has no relation to the war or any particular place. The First thing that Barron's Notes says is say the ring is like an atomic bomb. And the land influences the landscape after the war. Some of the things in the book are useful for pointing out what is assumed you already know about, like that shadows are bad and stars are good. As for the story, it is just the bare bones with no meat. If you read this first, you would be discouraged from reading the book, thinking it was long and dry.

A literary treasure

I first read this series of books when I was a teenager. I was astounded by the stories that filled my imagination with such wonder & amazement. Five decades later I still love to read the adventures of Bilbo & Frodo. I highly recommend all to read Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit, you will be glad you did.
