I enjoyed this book because it gives you an overview of the development of forts from ancient times to the present. There are line drawings, photos (some even in color) and cut-away views to help the reader understand how fortifications changed over time and what drove those changes. Because there is so much material, some things have to be skipped, but this is a really good primer for history buffs who want to trace the different engineering techniques used by the defense as well as what offensive weapons were used to defeat the forts. Recommended reading for a specialty area of history, makes this subject understandable and approachable.
