In the growing city of Asheville, North Carolina, in 1951, nurse Carolyn Hubbard has a job she loves, a handsome fiance, and great friends. But she can't help feeling as if there is something missing in her life. When she accepts a position providing medical services to people high in the Appalachain Mountains she has no idea how much her life is about to change. The people in the cove have no electricity. The only water available is fetched from a stream meandering near their tiny log cabins. Many residents live in squalor, but their troubles are not so different from the people in the city. When Carolyn finds herself falling in love with rugged, proud Jonah Buckner, she does all she can to fight her feelings, knowing that Jonah can't possibly feel the same about her. Torn between two worlds, can Carolyn find a happiness in either?
