THE HIDDEN TREASURE: The Immense Excellence of The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass

WHY READ THIS BOOK? BECAUSE it is an aid to our understanding of why (in the words of St. Leonard of Port Maurice) "Holy Mass is that Support on which the world rests, preventing the world from falling into horrid chaos;" and moreover, that "if we had not the Mass then the Death and Passion of Our Lord would be of no avail to us!" But how strange these notions are to those whom belong to the world! "Mass," says St. Peter Julian Eymard, "is the holiest act of religion. You cannot do anything to glorify God more, nor profit your soul more, than by devoutly assisting at It, and assisting as often as possible." Thus, does St. Pio of Pietrelcina exclaim: "If we only knew how God regards this Sacrifice, we would risk our lives to be present at a single Mass." But why, we may ask? St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that "the celebration of Holy Mass has the same Value as the Death of Jesus on the Cross;" unto which, St. Leonard of Port Maurice furthermore elucidates: "Mass is the very same Sacrifice that was offered on the Cross of Calvary, with this sole difference... the Sacrifice of the Cross was bloody, and was offered once, and did, on that one tremendous moment, satisfy fully for all the sins of the world; while the Sacrifice of the Altar is an Unbloody Sacrifice, which can be repeated throughout all times, and was instituted in order to apply to each of us that Universal Atonement which Christ made for us on Calvary." It is an article of Faith that Christ died for all without exception. However, we need only to reflect on the poor heathens (for example) in order to understand that they live most wretchedly; for, as St. John Vianney (who likely had access to writings of St. Leonard of Port Maurice) points out: "they can have no share in the Blessings of Redemption, while they have no priests to apply His Blood to their souls!" By reading this book, we are equipped to better understand what this means. The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass is The Golden Key of Paradise ---because, as St. Leonard tells us (and we paraphrase here): It obtains for us all needful Graces and Goods, as well as an innumerable number of holy inspirations and impulses, which rightly dispose us to shake off tepidity and stimulate us to more ardently work out our salvation with increased fervor, purer intentions, and greater merit. Holy Mass is, furthermore, the most efficacious means of obtaining from God the Grace of Final Perseverance. And moreover, Its celebration is the greatest action which is performed in this world, for (1) It most efficaciously appeases God's Anger against sinners, (2) It most effectually beats down the powers of Hell, (3) It obtains for us the greatest Benefits, and (4) It affords the greatest relief to the souls in Purgatory. In a word, the Divine Sacrifice of Holy Mass is an Action without which there would be no salvation in the world.
