The Hidden Cottage

Gerald drove past the cottage daily on his way to work and back. It sat up on the top of a hill, nearly completely hidden from view.

He would occasionally see signs of life up there: clothes hung out on a washing line, a soft amber light through a window.
In the boredom of driving the same route so often, he would try to imagine who lived up there and what'd led them
to live isolated from neighbours so remotely. He dreamt up all kinds of scenarios. It was only when his car broke down one winter's evening, and with his phone not charged, did he find himself climbing the hill to seek help from whoever lived in the cottage, and realise that even his wildest imaginings were tame compared to what he discovered.
