The heart's voice can be heard even by the deaf

An accident with a horse left Becca Kinder a widow nearly two years ago, but she had moved on with her life and supported her two young children by working in her in-laws' store. She wanted to fix up her house, which was in horrible shape, but didn't have much money. That's why Dan Holden seemed like such a godsend to her. The former marine had returned to his hometown, and he was an excellent carpenter. As Becca grew to know Dan, though, she knew he was hiding something - she just couldn't figure out quite what it was yet.Daniel Holden had lost his hearing in an explosion while in the military. He had returned to his hometown to lick his wounds and to get his life back on track, but he hid his deafness from the townspeople. Once Becca discovers his problem, however, Dan wonders why he was ever keeping his deafness a secret to begin with. As Dan works on Becca's house, he grows very attached to her two children - and to Becca herself. Dan had pledged to stay single and alone once he lost his hearing, but the more time he spent with Becca, the more he was questioning the wisdom of his decision!This book was pretty good. I liked the character of Dan, although I wondered why he had lost the ability to make a complete sentence once he was deaf. I spent part of my nursing clinicals working with hearing impaired individuals, and none of them had lost their grammar once they lost their hearing. Dan's ability to lip read was also way too good - even experienced lip readers can make mistakes or not follow some conversations well, especially at long distances. Still, I liked Dan, because he was sincere, and thought of others instead of being completely self-centered.I didn't care so much for Becca. She was a fair enough character, but the fact that she thought a mere 21 months without a man in her life was a long time almost made me laugh out loud. Her faith was simplistic, almost too simple and childish at times. Furthermore, Becca was sometimes mean to Dan in an attempt to push him away, and I just didn't care much for her. The only thing I could say about her is that she was a good mother. That's about all I liked in Becca. This book was focused a lot on God, so if you are less spiritually inclined, you may want to skip this one. The book was pleasant enough to read, but seemed too unrealistic some of the time. If you enjoy a quick, easy read, this may be the book for you, but if you are looking for something to sink your teeth into, you may want to pass this one over.
