The Hat, The Umbrella and The Little White Gloves
It's an ordinary Saturday morning when Clarissa opens the front door to check the weather - and finds a hat sitting on the doorstep. Silky black, high-crowned, and clearly lost by someone, it seems only right to take it in until its owner can be found. But the hat has no intention of being returned. Tucked away in the old carved trunk in the hallway, it begins to work its magic on the household almost at once.
Clarissa is the second-eldest of six children living in a once-grand, now slightly crumbling house on the Rue Gladioli, on the outskirts of Paris. Between them, thirteen-year-old Claudia, golden-haired Chloe, tart-tongued Clod, ten-year-old Alexander, quiet Clarissa, and baby Antoine keep the house running - cooking, cleaning, chasing spiders and mice - largely on their own. Their father is rarely home. Their mother almost never leaves her room.
When the hat is joined by an elegant umbrella and a pair of little white gloves, each carrying its own strange magic, the children realise something bigger is unfolding around them. Slowly, they begin to uncover the truth: a story of a magician's assistant, a broken heart, a wicked sorcerer named Marvello, and a spell that has quietly kept their family apart for far longer than any of them understood.
Warm, funny, and gently magical, The Hat, the Umbrella and the Little White Gloves is a story about siblings looking out for one another, the strange objects that find their way into our lives for a reason, and the kind of magic that can, in the end, bring a family back together.
