dubis sets the standard for books on the holocaust.

Dubis's book is a great read. It grabs from the beginning and carries you from page to page with the engrossing development of its main character Erik Byrnes, who is nicknamed, the Hangman. No other book, in my view, since "For Whom the Bell Tolls" deals so magnificently with war, humanity, and human flaws. The Hangman disposes of Jews and then discovers his own wife is of Jewish ancestry. The Hangman provides a brilliant study of human courage and the will to survive. It places a spotlight on normal human beings and their capability of commiting inhuman acts. Some may say this story of darkness has been told before. If so, I would point out that no writer has ever told it with more literacy and artistic genius.

Tale of what extraordinary circumstances can do to a man.

Mike Dubis' chilling tale, The Hangman, posits the question, "To what depths can an ordinary man descend when thrust into extraordinary circumstances?"Dubis presents a protagonist in SS Officer Erik Byrnes who is at once irredeemable and oddly sympathic. I do not for a moment relate to or espouse the priciples upon which Byrnes bases his very existence, but when one considers that an entire nation was likewise beguiled by the power of Hitler's propoganda, it does offer a rare insight into the mechanisms by which people can fall under the sway of such charismatic figures.Byrnes, having sold his soul to Nazi dogma, and having earned himself the nom de guerre, The Hangman, is then forced to turn his back on the powers that be to save his wife and daughters, whom he discovers are part Jewish. Byrnes' simple world of black and white, of rule and order, is suddenly so many shades of gray. Byrnes is forced to turn to the very Jews he has persecuted to assist in a daring escape.Does one root for such a "hero"? Or are his crimes unforgivable? Thankfully, Dubis does not attempt to answer the question for the reader, choosing rather to leave it lingering as food for thought. On another level, The Hangman is a fine adventure story, with all the characteristics the genre demands: action, suspense, even a bit of romance. Neither does Dubis flinch from the brutality of the Nazi regime- violence lurks around every page. The result is a quick and well-paced read.Dubis also flexes his knowledge of wartime Germany to fine effect- reflecting the initial high hopes of a German people subjugated by the constrictions of Versailles, and the slow deterioration of faith in their Fuhrer. And the Austrian and German countryside become characters unto themselves. The story is well researched in the best sense- Dubis does not flaunt his knowledge, he incorporates it seemlessly into the narrative.Anyone interested in World War II, the Holocaust or Nazi Germany is well advised to pick up a copy of Dubis' novel. Enjoy. I did.
